NSW: Petrol tanker and sedan collide on central coast
A petrol tanker has rolled onto a car and burst into flames killing three people on
the New South Wales central coast.
Police say the accident occurred at a roundabout near the F3 outside Ourimbah, killing
the drivers of both vehicles and a passenger.
NSW Fire Brigade spokesman PETER LLOWARCH says the driver of the tanker, that was carrying
more than 36,000 litres of fuel, has been confirmed dead.
Police are unable to confirm how many others were involved in the crash, although they
believe there were two in the sedan.
A spokesman says a clear picture of what caused the accident may not emerge until tomorrow.
Mr LLOWARCH says recovery workers are waiting until the wreckage cools and the remaining
fuel is siphoned off before they begin removing the bodies of the victims.
Firefighters took several hours to contain the blaze and a number of smaller fires
sparked by fuel leaking from the tanker.
Police accident investigators are still at the scene.
The incident came as the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority launched an advertising campaign
aimed at reducing road deaths north of Sydney over the holiday period.
