NSW: Mary MacKillop SuperCat blessed by archbishop

NSW: Mary MacKillop SuperCat blessed by archbishop

SYDNEY, Dec 27 AAP - A busy Sydney Ferries SuperCat has been blessed by the city's
Catholic archbishop in one of the first events celebrating the impending sainthood of
Mary MacKillop.

The Mary MacKillop SuperCat has been running since 2000, but on Sunday was blessed
by Cardinal George Pell in the presence of a group of nuns and NSW Premier Kristina Keneally.

"Bless this ferry named after Blessed Mary MacKillop, bless those who will use it for
work and pleasure," Cardinal Pell said at Sydney's Circular Quay.

"The Lord calmed the seas of Galilee and brought his disciples to safety and we commend
those who use this ferry to his care."

The SuperCat carries up to 275 passengers to the city's eastern suburbs.

The premier said the blessing of the boat was a "small way to commemorate and celebrate
Mary MacKillop's life".

"She was a pioneer of aged care and caring for single mothers and worked tirelessly
to improve access to education for rural communities across the country."

Ms Keneally said she was looking forward to "coming back to rename this ferry, the
Saint Mary MacKillop".

The government would work with the church and the community to hold future Mary MacKillop
celebrations throughout Sydney and NSW.

While all Sydney ferries were safe, "after today's blessing, this is perhaps the holiest",
she added.

Qld: Public servant ban will hurt Palm Islanders: Bligh

EDS: Updates Bligh comments

BRISBANE, Dec 2 AAP - An indigenous mayor who is trying to ban Queensland public servants
from his troubled community has been branded as irresponsible by the state's premier.

Palm Island mayor Alf Lacey says grievances on the island have been ignored by the
Queensland government, so non-essential state workers are no longer welcome.

Premier Anna Bligh said the ban was unlawful and would only work to the detriment of
the community.

"It is grossly irresponsible," Ms Bligh told state parliament on Tuesday.

"I can think of few communities in Queensland or Australia that need the assistance
of government more than Palm Island."

People on Palm Island are 25 times more likely to be hospitalised for assault than
other Queenslanders, and school attendance is just 68 per cent compared with a state average
of 89 per cent, Ms Bligh said.

She called on Mr Lacey to lead his community by supporting the government's efforts
in health, education and other support.

"The mayor on this issue is comprehensively wrong. He suggested in reports this morning
... that public servants from George Street were heading to Palm Island for a holiday,"

she said.

"I can assure the mayor that people from the Queensland public sector that visit Palm
Island in the course of their duties do so because that is their job.

"We will continue to send public servant there to do their work."

Opposition local government spokesman Howard Hobbs said that while he sympathises with
the council's issues, he cannot support its tactics.

"I don't think this is the way a community should operate," he said.

Mr Lacey said if the government ignored the ban, islanders would refuse to deal with them.

Palm Island made international headlines when residents burned down government facilities
after local man Cameron Doomadgee died in police custody in November 2004.

Today's birthday May 2: Donatella Versace (1955 - ) Italian fashion designer.

Donatella Versace is the younger sister of fashion legend Gianni Versace, and is considered
a doyenne of the fashion industry.

Born on May 2, 1955 in Calabria, Italy, Donatella was for a long time her famous brother
Gianni's inspiration and muse.

Although Gianni was a decade her senior, the two were close, and Donatella followed
him to Florence when at 25, he went to study knitwear.

As the Versace brand name went from strength to strength in the 1980s, Donatella played
an increasingly important role in designing clothes.

Her own label, Versus has been an important part of Versace's successes, and she was
one of the first designers to use celebrities, rather than models, prominently as the
face of the label.

She married American model Paul Beck, and they had two children, Allegra and Daniel.

The couple are now estranged.

In 1997, Gianni Versace was gunned down outside his Miami mansion by a suspected serial
killer who committed suicide before the police arrived.

From then, Donatella became more recognisable, somewhat ironically, when she began
to be regularly impersonated on Saturday Night Live.

She was the driving force behind the move by Versace company to branch into hotels.

Palazzo Versace on Queensland's Gold Coast was opened in 2000, and another hotel - designed
largely by Donatella is expected to open in Dubai later this year.

She made brief cameo appearances in the 2001 fashion spoof Zoolander as well as The
Devil Wears Prada (2005).

Donatella was in the news in 2007 when she announced that her then 20-year-old daughter
Allegra was receiving treatment for anorexia.

TAS: Forest defenders admit anti-logging charges

HOBART, April 2 AAP - Eight "forest defenders" have pleaded guilty to charges relating
to anti-logging protests in southern Tasmania.

They did not have any convictions recorded against them but were placed on good behaviour
bonds from six months to two years at the Hobart Magistrates Court today.

The charges, ranging from trespass, failing to comply, and obstructing a police officer,
relate to protests in the Upper Florentine and Weld valleys earlier this year.

Speaking outside court, Still Wild Still Threatened spokeswoman Ula Majewski said the
group would continue to act against forest devastation.

"At this very moment, chainsaws, bulldozers and excavators are ripping apart some of
Tasmania's most precious and complex ecosystems located in the Upper Florentine, Weld
and Styx valleys," she said.

She said a number of peaceful community protests have been conducted in the Upper Florentine
and Weld valleys in response to Forestry Tasmania's expanded logging and roading operations
within old growth forests in the area.

Eight other people today pleaded not guilty to forest protest charges and their cases
were adjourned to May.

Researchers at University of Rhode Island Target Social Science.

According to recent research published in the journal Theory into Practice, "This article highlights four cognitive processes key to online reading comprehension and how one might begin to transform existing think-aloud strategy models to encompass the challenges of reading for information on the Internet."

"Informed by principles of cognitive apprenticeship and an emerging taxonomy of online reading comprehension strategies, I introduce think-aloud instructional models for explicitly teaching students how expert readers approach, interact with, monitor their understanding of, and respond to online information texts. Over time, think-aloud strategy lessons in online reading environments help students recognize, label, and define a range of more and less familiar online cueing systems and related reading purposes," wrote J. Coiro and colleagues, University of Rhode Island.

The researchers concluded: "In turn, students can begin to actively consider additional strategies for effectively comprehending and using the range of informational texts they encounter on the Internet."

Coiro and colleagues published their study in Theory into Practice (Talking About Reading as Thinking: Modeling the Hidden Complexities of Online Reading Comprehension. Theory into Practice, 2011;50(2):107-115).

Rebtel Makes Finals In the 2011 Red Herring Top 100 Europe Award.

2007 Red Herring winner and Skype competitor in the running for a second time to claim top spot at one of Europe's most esteemed technology awards

Stockholm, Sweden - May 16, 2011 - Rebtel, the world's largest independent mobile VoIP company, announced it has been selected as a finalist in Red Herring's Top 100 Europe award, a prestigious list honoring the year's most promising private technology ventures from the European business region.

The Red Herring editorial team selected the most innovative companies from a pool of hundreds from across Europe. The nominees are evaluated on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, quality of management, execution of strategy, and integration into their respective industries.

This unique assessment of potential is complemented by a review of the actual track record and standing of a company, which allows Red Herring to see past the "buzz" and make the list an valuable instrument for discovering and advocating the greatest business opportunities in the industry.

"It's a great feeling to even be picked as a Top 100 company by the Red Herring team among all these other amazing European businesses that are currently thriving, but to do it for second time after our win in 2007 is just a tremendous feeling. It's a testament that we've done the right things in the past 4 years," said Andreas Bernstrom, CEO of Rebtel.

This is the second time Rebtel is up for Red Herring's coveted Top 100 Europe award. In 2007, the company made it all the way to number one when it won first-place honors among more than 700 other European technology companies.

"This year was very rewarding" said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. "The global economic situation has abated and there are many great companies producing really innovative and amazing products. We had a very difficult time narrowing the pool and selecting the finalists. Rebtel shows great promise therefore deserves to be among the Finalists. Now we're faced with the difficult task of selecting the Top 100 winners of Red Herring Europe. We know that the 2011 crop will grow into some amazing companies that are sure to make an impact"

Finalists for the 2011 edition of the Red Herring 100 Europe award are selected based upon their technological innovation, management strength, market size, investor record, customer acquisition, and financial health. During the several months leading up to the announcement, hundreds of companies in the telecommunications, security, Web 2.0, software, hardware, biotech, mobile and other industries completed their submissions to qualify for the award.

The Finalists are invited to present their winning strategies at the Red Herring Europe Forum in Amsterdam, May 23-25, 2011. The Top 100 winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony the evening of May 25 at the event.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.(Burson-Marsteller)

Byline: Bob Garfield

May 13, 2011

FACEBOOK IS "LIKE"-ABLE, BUT NOT VERY LIKEABLE. DOUCHEBAGGERY AT BURSON-MARSTELLER, TOO.

Famous Social Network and P.R. firm are Lairs for Sneaks, Dirty Tricksters u But You Didn't Hear It from Us

CAN'T SAY WHERE, USA, May 13, 2011 -- Audiences of David Fincher's hit film "The Social Network" left theaters worldwide remarking, "Whoa. I wonder if Mark Zuckerberg is really such a dick?" While the line between art and reality is often unknowable, events this week demonstrate that dickish values and tactics are alive and well at the world's biggest social network and marginally profitable Zynga credits merchant.

First, a USA Today story revealed that PR agency Burson-Marsteller, on behalf of an unnamed client, had been engaged to interest bloggers and media outlets in a story tarring Google's Social Circle feature on Gmail, which reporters were told places millions of users at high risk of privacy breaches. Later, the Daily Beast identified the mystery client as Facebook, where executives apparently fear Gmail's encroachment in the social-connectivity business Facebook dominates throughout the Milky Way galaxy.

Burson flacks approached both newspapers and at least one prominent privacy-hawk blogger, Christopher Soghoian, with a case against Google and some helpful suggestions for chastening, embarrassing, damaging and/or smearing the search giant on newsstands, online and on the regulatory front lines:

Google, as you know, has a well-known history of infringing on the privacy rights of America's internet users. Not a year has gone by since the founding of the company where it has not been the focus of front-page news detailing its zealous approach to gathering information--in many cases private and identifiable information--about online users..

I'm happy to help place the op-ed and assist in the drafting, if needed. For media targets, I was thinking about the Washington Post, Politico, The Hill, Roll Call or the Huffington Post.

To his everlasting credit, Soghoian asked who was sponsoring the anti-Google campaign and, when he was refused the information, went public with the email exchange.

Meanwhile, the backlash against Facebook has begun. The online public seems divided by the episode, some believing Zuckerberg's or not-Zuckerberg's brainchild to be "the douchiest company ever" and others concluding it is "the douchiest and most cowardly company ever."

"They're about to go public for, like, $50 billion, and they're behaving like Leeza telling Jayson that Courtney is a slut? Seriously? Are they, like, in 7th grade?" said one observer, who asked not to be identified so that the remark would not be traced back to her. "Also," she added, "what's with the teeth-whitener ads? Are they saying I have gray teeth? Also, I still don't get what a 'poke' is."

Facebook, which is rumored to be worse than Stalin, the shingles and Chris Brown put together, responded to the revelations by wriggling like a can of nightcrawlers.

"We engaged Burson-Marsteller to focus attention on this issue, using publicly available information that could be independently verified by any media organization or analyst," it said in a statement to USA Today. "The issues are serious, and we should have presented them in a serious and transparent way."

In a statement, Burson-Marsteller heroically acknowledged that it was all Facebook's idea.

In other smears, intelligence officials poring over the trove of computer hard drives and memory sticks recovered from the Abbotabad, Pakistan, dwelling of Osama bin Laden may have found evidence of links between Facebook and al-Qaeda.

"Not a year has gone by since the founding of the company," said one official who declined to be identified lest his motives be questioned causing the bombshell to blow up in his conniving face, "where Facebook hasn't tried to destroy our way of life or at least Friendster. They hate our freedom."

The official was at a loss to explain poking.

Medals of Honor recall deeds of two soldiers.(Front)

By Darlene Superville

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON

When President Barack Obama expressed his pride in America's men and women in uniform, he was speaking about those who hours earlier had killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and those who six decades earlier had given their lives in the Korean War.

During a somber ceremony Monday in the White House East Room, Obama bestowed the Medal of Honor posthumously on two Army privates - Anthony T. Kaho'ohanohano of Pukalani, Hawaii, and Henry Svehla of Belleville, N.J.

"Today we remember them with the highest military decoration that our nation can bestow," Obama said, describing the pair as "hometown kids who stood tall in America's uniform."

Kaho'ohanohano was in charge of a machine-gun squad with Company H, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division on Sept. 1, 1951, when they were overrun by enemy forces.

He ordered the squad to fall back and seek cover, then gathered up some grenades and fought the enemy alone. When his ammunition ran out, he fought them hand-to-hand until he was killed.

Svehla, a rifleman with Company F, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, charged enemy positions when his platoon began to falter under heavy fire on June 12, 1952.

He destroyed enemy positions and inflicted heavy casualties, but when an enemy grenade landed among a group of his comrades, he threw himself on the grenade and was fatally wounded.

Relatives accepted the medals on behalf of their deceased loved ones.

Anthony Svehla, a nephew, said he never knew his uncle but was so inspired by the stories that relatives told him that, about 10 years ago, he began researching Medal of Honor winners on the Internet and contacted his congressman. His uncle had received a Distinguished Service Cross - as did Kaho'ohanohano - but Anthony Svehla said he thought his uncle deserved a higher level of recognition and pressed for it.

"We feel very honored and proud today," he said afterward, "that my uncle received this medal."

The first product will be a stock market newsletter produced in conjunction with Princeton Research, directed by stock research expert Mike King.

Winning Edge President and COO Douglas Miller commented, "Over the past seven years, we have built two major assets that we will be utilizing in this new venture: our database of over 2 million predominantly male sports enthusiasts; and the national name recognition and credibility of the Company's CEO, Wayne Allyn Root, who the media has dubbed 'The Merrill Lynch of The Weekend.' We have been analyzing ways to mine and monetize these assets. We know that many of our callers who look to us for sports information for their weekend wagers are risk-taking, high-income men who wager on stocks during the week. Therefore, a stock market newsletter is a natural product extension. We intend it to be the first in a stream of products and services aimed at our demographically highly attractive database."

King said, "I've spent over half a century researching stocks and building my brand name on Wall Street. It is exciting to be joining forces with a man that Fortune magazine called 'The Benjamin Graham of Sports Gambling' in a joint venture to educate WEI's database in the art of stock investing. Over the past 20 years, millions of typical stock investors have turned to Wayne Allyn Root to provide quality investment advice in the field of sports wagering. Now it is time to provide that same database with professional stock research."
