Fed: Rio Tinto says Jabiluka to remain on hold

Rio Tinto says mining of its controversial Jabiluka uranium deposit will remain onhold until the traditional owners of the land endorse the project.

Rio Tinto chairman Sir ROBERT WILSON says the company's position is clear.

Sir ROBERT told Rio Tinto's annual general meeting there will be no further developmentat Jabiluka without the consent of the traditional owners.

He says the company is discussing environmental issues with the traditional ownersof the Jabiluka site, the Mirrar people.

Sir ROBERT's comments follow demands by shareholder DAVE SWEENEY, representing theAustralian Conservation Foundation, the company guarantee uranium mining will never becarried out at Jabiluka.

But Sir ROBERT says Rio Tinto can't guarantee that.
