Fed: Gillard says camp conditions primitive but acceptable

CANBERRA, Feb 5 AAP - Labor immigration spokesman Julia Gillard today declared conditionsin offshore immigration detention centres to be primitive but generally acceptable.

Ms Gillard said the policy of offshore processing remained costly, detrimental to theasylum seekers and probably unsustainable in the long term.

Speaking after visiting the centres in company with Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock,she said living conditions were probably very good compared with the conditions in manyother refugee camps throughout the world.
